Protect Your Home From Water Damage

If you’re a homeowner or renter, sooner or later you will be affected by water damage to your home or property.  To ease the stress it can cause, a couple tips can help you be prepared.

Take for example pipes.  Pipes are the life blood of the house, without them you don’t have access to clean water and without them you don’t have a way to get rid of unclean water.  It’s therefore beneficial to inspect pipes regularly throughout the year. Over time the environment can erode your pipes and eventually cause leaks.  In addition, appliances such as dishwashers and refrigerators must be installed correctly and maintained.  Inspecting the water connection to these appliances can save you hundreds of dollars.

Another way to protect your home from water damage is by inspecting your roof. No matter where you live, the roof is exposed to extreme weather conditions.  High winds, rain and sunlight can have a tremendous effect on the longevity of your roof.  If your roof starts to degrade, leaks can easily develop without you realizing it. If you live in a humid climate, this can make the issue worse.  We recommend you have a professional inspect your roof, especially after a storm.  You can also do visual inspections regularly.

On the Big Island of Hawaii, flash floods can cause water to seep into homes depending on where and how the house is built.  Make sure your home has proper drainage, this includes gutters.  Clean your gutters of debris a few times a year to prevent clogging.
